Assange in court: The whole world's watching

This was the scene outside Westminster Magistrates' Court today as photographer's and film crews from around the world awaited the outcome of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's bail hearing. He was granted conditional bail on a £200,000 surety.

Other bail conditions include having to give up his passport. He must also obey a curfew and wear an electronic tag.

An appeal by the Swedish authorities who are seeking to extradite Assange on sex charges will mean he will have to stay in custody for up to 48 hours.

Journalist John Pilger, a supporter of the WikiLeaks founder, speaking outside the court, said: "I am elated, he's close to freedom." He said Assange had "made some very serious enemies, for very good reasons".
