Rusbridger and Davies win Media Society Award

Guardian
editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger and journalist Nick Davies, whose reporting for the newspaper revealed the extent of phone hacking at the News of the World, have been jointly named as recipients of the 2012 Media Society Award.

Announcing the award, The Media Society said: “The Guardian’s revelations and coverage of the phone hacking story has not only brought an issue of great importance to the attention of the public, but led to a major debate about the practices and role of our press.

“Since becoming editor of the Guardian, Alan Rusbridger has led the paper in its evolution from broadsheet to its present Berliner format, and in its embrace of online journalism. He has consistently defended journalism’s role as holding power to account.

“Nick Davies has demonstrated the highest qualities of persistence in his following of the biggest media stories in recent years, while his concern for the health and future of his craft is manifest: he is an outstanding defender of the importance of good reporting as the basis for good journalism.”

The award will be presented at a dinner at the Corinthia Hotel, London on 24th May.
